Yellowstone. The world’s first national park. A park recognized globally for its bizarre natural wonders and incredible wildlife viewing, Yellowstone is like no other place on earth. On this photography workshop, you will join local photographer Evan Watts for a 9-day excursion into the heart of Yellowstone. There we will have the opportunity to photograph American bison, wolves, coyotes, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, red foxes, elk and much more as they fight to survive the bitter, cold winter that grips this region of the Rockies. This will be a masterclass in cold-weather photography and with so many of America’s large mammals roaming the Yellowstone landscape, we will have no shortage of subjects to practice on. By the end of this workshop, you will not only have a diverse array of photos of iconic mammals in the snow, but you will be a better wildlife photographer with a deeper understanding of both the technical and artistic aspects of wildlife photography.

Ecologically, Yellowstone National Park divided into two very separate geographic areas: the Yellowstone Caldera (called the Interior) and the Northern Range (including the Lamar Valley). Both volcanically influenced regions provide world-class opportunities to view and photograph a variety of wildlife as well as spectacular scenery not replicated anywhere else on the planet.

Northern Range: Three full days will focus on photographing bison, elk, deer, moose, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, eagles, and, hopefully, the wolves that call the Northern Range home. Our comfortable tour vehicles provide you the space to store equipment while multiple days in the field vastly increases your odds of photographing a diverse number of wildlife species.

Interior: Three full days include a privately chartered snowcoach that will transport you over snow into a wonderland of geysers, hot springs, and frozen waterfalls. Steamy eruptions of Old Faithful Geyser and the colorful walls of Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon provide breathtaking backdrops to capture the story of survival of  our native wildlife.

These small groups of like-minded individuals and private transportation provide the luxury of extended stops for photography in both regions without compromising the comfort of a warm vehicle, hot beverages, and plenty of snacks.

Yellowstone Wild January Photography Tour with Guide Evan Watts is the Best Photo Tour in the Lower 48!

Guide Evan Watts used his experience working and photographing in Yellowstone to maximize our opportunities on the Northern Range and the interior of the park. The wonderful powdery snow provided a beautiful contrasting background for large bull moose, icy bison, mousing foxes, rams, coyotes, river otters, bald eagles, majestic bull elk and more. This doesn't even cover the landscapes and beautiful light. And then, there were the huckleberry scones and hot chocolate for the midmorning warmup! This trip is a blur of awesomeness. Thanks, Evan!

Ask for Evan! Best Guide!

Evan was a great guide thinking of everything. Always ensuring the temperature was right for us in the SUV, asked what we wanted to see the most and set out to make that happen. We said “Moose” and boy or boy did he deliver. We counted seeing 15 moose in that one 8 hour period including a Bull Moose not far from the road. Amazing! We got to experience a Bison jam and take many photos of the Bison. Evan gave great tips on manual camera settings and how to best line up the shot. We saw coyote, elk, female big horn sheep , mule deer and a pigmy owl. He was able to show us a big group of big horn sheep and mountain goats on his scope and coyotes running along a stream in the far distance. Had a great picnic lunch in the perfect spot. Evan gave a great mix of history of Yellowstone, wildlife information We learned a lot and had an amazing time. Hope to come back in the Spring and will certainly ask for Evan.
